About UUNZ

UUNZ has been delivering English language programmes to international learners since 2002. Under our trading name UUNZ Tertiary Pathways, we focus on providing the language, academic skills and cultural competence learners need to thrive in tertiary study.

Our Story

'Our mission is to deliver innovative and empowering education and training that develops 21st century skills, promotes global citizenship, and strengthens local, national and international communities.'

UUNZ Tertiary Pathways is a private tertiary provider based in the heart of the university district in Auckland, New Zealand. We have been delivering English language and tertiary programmes to international students from all over the world since 2002.

Since 2021, we have specialised in providing English language pathways to tertiary study in universities and polytechnics throughout New Zealand. We have partnerships with universities both in New Zealand and offshore, including the University of Waikato, Massey University, the University of Southern Queensland, Australia, and an extensive network of universities and vocational institutes in China.

UUNZ has highly qualified and experienced staff who have expertise across General English, proficiency exam preparation and English for Academic Purposes.

UUNZ has a purpose-built campus over eight floors just 5 minutes' walk from the University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology.

The UUNZ campus is a vibrant cultural and community centre, with short courses available in a variety of cultural and vocational fields. The campus also has a permanent exhibition celebrating New Zealand's historic relationship with China, and the life and work of Rewi Alley.

Our Pathways

We offer English language programmes at every level from beginner to advanced — delivered face-to-face in Auckland or online from anywhere in the world.

General English is for learners who want to improve their everyday English. It covers reading, writing, speaking and listening across a range of topics and develops core grammar and vocabulary for real-world communication.

NZCEL Level 4 (New Zealand Certificate in English Language — Academic English) is for learners preparing to enter undergraduate study. It builds the academic English, critical thinking and study skills needed to succeed at degree level. Graduates typically achieve IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.

NZCEL Level 5 (New Zealand Certificate in English Language — Academic English) is for learners preparing to enter postgraduate study. It develops advanced academic writing, research skills and discipline-specific vocabulary. Graduates typically achieve IELTS 6.5–7.0 or equivalent.

  • Study face-to-face in New Zealand or online from anywhere in the world
  • Part-time study options for online learners so they can learn English alongside their university studies
  • Seamless pathway and articulation agreements with New Zealand universities, so learners can credit their existing tertiary study towards a New Zealand qualification

Who accepts NZCEL?

NZCEL qualifications are accepted by all eight New Zealand universities, New Zealand's national polytechnic, and internationally via UUNZ's pathway partnership with the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ).

University of Southern Queensland

UUNZ and the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) have maintained a strong partnership for over 20 years, including a direct pathway arrangement. Through this collaboration, learners can complete their English language preparation with UUNZ and then progress to undergraduate or postgraduate study with UniSQ.

Quality & Accreditation

"A quality-focused, educationally robust, student-centred provider."

— NZQA External Evaluation and Review report, 2025

Confident in educational performance

Confident in capability in self-assessment

Registered with NZQA

As a Private Training Establishment (PTE), UUNZ is registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) — the government agency responsible for overseeing the quality of education in New Zealand. In order to remain registered, UUNZ must follow the rules set by NZQA, and NZQA carries out regular checks to ensure these rules are being followed.

Quality assurance and self-review

In our most recent External Evaluation and Review (EER), carried out by NZQA in October 2025, we achieved ratings of Confident for both educational performance and capability in self-assessment. We also achieved ratings of Excellent for learner support and wellbeing and compliance management, and Good or Excellent for all other areas.

NZQA’s External Evaluation and Review system ceased operation on 19 January 2026, when the Quality Assurance of Tertiary Education Providers Rules 2026 came into force. As an NZQA-registered PTE, UUNZ now takes part in NZQA’s integrated Quality Assurance Framework, under which providers carry out an annual self-review of their own performance and submit a self-review summary report to NZQA. UUNZ’s first summary report is due in the week commencing 24 May 2027.

Code of Practice

UUNZ is a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. The Code protects the safety and wellbeing of tertiary and international learners in New Zealand. It contains detailed requirements relating to all aspects of learners' lives and studies — including the information they receive before and after they enrol, and how they are guided and supported while they are studying.

As a signatory, UUNZ must follow all of the Code's requirements, carries out an annual review of its Code compliance, and takes action wherever improvements are needed. NZQA monitors UUNZ's compliance with the Code. Full details of the Code are available on the NZQA website.

Learner Wellbeing

We take a whole school approach to learner wellbeing. At UUNZ, wellbeing means learners having a positive frame of mind and resilience; feeling satisfied with themselves, their relationships, their experiences and their progress towards their academic goals; and being healthy and feeling secure.

Our Student Services team supports students with all aspects of life in New Zealand. You can read more about what to expect on our Student Life page; full operational detail, including 24/7 contact arrangements for enrolled students, is set out in the Student Handbook.

Governance

UUNZ is governed by an Academic and Advisory Board — a group of experts with many years of experience in leadership positions with New Zealand education providers and businesses. The Board's role is to ensure UUNZ achieves its mission and strategic goals, delivers high-quality education, and promotes the wellbeing of all learners. It does this by providing advice and recommendations to management, allocating resources to improve facilities and develop learning materials, and setting strategic goals for continuous improvement.

One member of the Board oversees UUNZ's English language assessments, ensuring they are well designed and that assessors' decisions are fair and accurate.
